Will this be the new points system in Formula 1 in 2025?

Formula 1 are considering a change to the points system from 2025, Motorsport.com reports. This change is mainly a way to ensure smaller teams can score more points.

According to the outlet, the new points system will be discussed at the next F1 Commission in Geneva. All teams, F1 and FIA, will meet there to discuss key points, including the points system. The smaller teams would favour more points in a race weekend to spread the total number of points.

The new points system for F1 in 2025

The new points system will change very little. Instead of 10, 12 drivers will get points at the end of the race. The points for the first seven drivers will remain the same. Only from eighth place onwards is it different. It then runs as follows: 5,4,3,2,1, so that the complete top 12 can earn points.

This way, little changes at the top, but smaller teams can score points more easily. Those teams would now mainly point to the big gap between the top teams and the smaller teams, with the latter often competing for spots that do not earn points. Increasing the number of point positions should solve that problem.

After four races in 2024, three teams have yet to score a single point in this Formula 1 season. Williams, Stake and Alpine are all still at zero points. Visa Cash App RB and Haas scored only seven and four points respectively. The gap to the top five is immense.
