No new F1 points system for now: More research needed first

The points system in Formula 1 will remain as it is for now. On Thursday, the F1 Commission met to discuss a proposal for a new points system where 11th and 12th places would also be entitled to points. It was agreed that more research is needed before a final verdict can be made.

The new proposal on the table means P11 and P12 will also score points. Positions 1 to 7 in a Grand Prix would score as many points as they currently do: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, and 6, respectively. Plans to change the points from position 8 onwards are underway, but it will not be decided until the next F1 Commission meeting in July.

“Commission members discussed a proposal for changes to the distribution of Championship points, as described in Articles 6.4 and 6.5 of the Sporting Regulations. It was agreed that further analysis of proposed changes was required with a view to a proposal to be presented to the F1 Commission meeting in July,” reads the statement.

This puts the smaller teams in Formula 1 on hold. Prior to the meeting, they expressed a fervent desire to change the points system, as they feel they are now often racing without any chance of points. So that will remain the case for at least the next few months.

Half of the Formula 1 grid together picked up just 12 points in five Grands Prix and a sprint race. And that’s compared to the 546 points already distributed. VCARB and Haas F1 did score some points. Williams, Alpine and Stake F1 are without points so far.
