What is the new proposed F1 point-scoring format?

Throughout Formula 1’s history, the sport has used various point-scoring formats.

In the early stages of the championship, only the top five finishers scored points before the sixth-place classifier was awarded from 1960.

More versions have been introduced ever since, with the current system of the top 10 rewarded in place since 2010.

A slightly re-jigged system was implemented in 2019, gifting the driver with the fastest lap an additional point providing they finish inside the top 10.

However, a new format could be introduced as early as the 2025 season.

The proposed new system would see point finishing positions expand to 12th place.

The extra point for the fastest lap would extend to the top 12.

It would mean that the majority of the field would be eligible to score points for the first time in the sport’s history.

The system would offer a boost to teams in the bottom half of the pecking and provide an extra opportunity to get points on the board in the constructors’ championship battle.

Below you can see the proposed new points system.
