Armed with upgrades and a new contract, Piastri sets sights on Japan

With a new contract signed and upgrades to his McLaren, Oscar Piastri has his sights set on more Formula 1 points this weekend in Japan.

Key points:

  • Oscar Piastri finished seventh last weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix
  • The Australian signed a contract extension with McLaren to 2026
  • This Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix will be held at Suzuka

The 22-year-old Australian drove a brilliant race last Sunday in Singapore, finishing seventh after starting 17th on the grid.

McLaren also announced this week they have extended Piastri’s contract to 2026, following impressive performances in his rookie season.

Piastri is 11th in the drivers’ championship, with six top 10 finishes and a best of fourth at the British Grand Prix.

He will be hoping upgrades to his McLaren will yield similar results to his teammate Lando Norris’s second place at last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

“I had good pace in Singapore, made up 10 positions, so I’m hoping to improve on that performance and finish in the points again,” Piastri said.

“Suzuka is definitely a track everyone wants to drive at, so I’m looking forward to experiencing that for the first time this weekend.”

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella is also eyeing off Japan as a possible success for McLaren, with both cars sporting upgrades.

“Off the back of a positive result for us in Singapore, we are now focused on seeing what these latest upgrades can do in Japan across both cars,” he said.

“The conditions in Suzuka can make for a trickier race and so we are keeping a close eye on the weather as we approach the weekend.

“However, we know that we have made vast improvements since the start of the season, so we will keep looking ahead and do our best to secure another good haul of points for the team.”
